Feeding Schedule & Nutrition
A balanced diet is the foundation of your dog's health. Feeding frequency changes as your dog grows:
| Dog Age/Type | Recommended Frequency |
|---|---|
| 8 to 12 Weeks | 4 meals per day |
| 3 to 6 Months | 3 meals per day |
| 6 Months to 1 Year | 2 meals per day |
| Adult Dogs (1 Year+) | 1 meal per day (or 2 smaller meals for larger breeds) |
Nutrition Tip: Premium-quality dry food provides a balanced diet. While you can add cottage cheese, cooked egg, or vegetables, these should not exceed 10% of your dog's daily food intake. Avoid "people food" to prevent obesity and mineral imbalances.
Exercise
Dogs need physical and mental stimulation to stay healthy and avoid destructive behaviors. Supervised games satisfy instinctual urges to dig, herd, chew, and chase.
Grooming
Brush frequently to reduce shedding and check for fleas/ticks daily in warm weather. Most dogs only need a bath a few times a year. Always comb out mats before bathing.
Comfort & Safety
Safe Handling
Small Dogs/Puppies: Place one hand under the chest and support the hind legs with the other. Never lift by the forelegs or neck.
Large Dogs: Support the chest with one arm and the rear end with the other.
Housing & Rest
Provide a warm, quiet place away from drafts. A training crate or dog bed with clean blankets is ideal. If outdoors, ensure they have access to shade and cool water in summer, and dry, warm shelter in winter.
Health & Legal Requirements
- Licensing & ID: Attach your community license to the collar. Use ID tags and microchips to ensure a safe return if lost.
- Medicines & Poisons: Never give unprescribed meds. In emergencies, call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435.
- Spaying & Neutering: Most dogs should be spayed or neutered by six months of age to improve health and behavior.
- Vaccinations: Stay up-to-date on essential vaccinations to protect against common canine diseases.
